[ARCHIVED] Hollywood at the Homestead: Nostalgic Summer Movie Nights

Red barn in background, with an old windmill in front of it.

By Heidi Fuhrman, Museum Education Coordinator

Imagine, the year is 1939. You’re walking down Main Street in Windsor with a couple of nickels clutched in your fist. An auto rumbles past, you hear the train whistle and the strains of a radio drift on the evening breeze from an open window somewhere on Walnut. You walk past Frazier’s Drug Store, the smell of butterscotch and the ice cream you know is waiting at the soda fountain is tempting, but you’re headed somewhere better. Somewhere magical. A story with a wizard, a witch, and a pair of red shoes awaits you. You’re heading to the Windsor Theater to watch the opening night of The Wizard of Oz!

Nearly 100 years ago, Windsor’s Movie Theater (yes, Windsor had a movie theater!) opened off Main Street. For 52 years, Windsorites flocked to their theater for the biggest (and smallest) blockbusters. . . perhaps YOU remember seeing your first movie there? The Windsor Theater was the pride of town. When it opened in 1930, it was the only theater in Colorado outside of Denver where you could see a “talkie,” or film with sound!

This summer, the Windsor Museum is bringing back some of the magic of our lost theater! Join us at our brand-new site, the Historic Halfway Homestead, as we show local favorites from bygone decades, with a splash of local history. Our new program, Hollywood at the Homestead, is perfect for unlocking some nostalgia and discovering some local stories.

This summer, spend an evening like Windsorites before you and grab a ticket to join us at…
