The Town of Windsor is a Starfish Aquatics Institute Training Center and all our instructors receive training and certifications from the Starfish Aquatics Institute. Starfish Aquatics is recognized nationally and globally.
We offer group swim lessons for ages 6 months to 12 years old.
Starbabies
6 months to 3 years with an adult
The StarBabies course introduces infants and toddlers to the water in a fun and loving environment, while training parents and caregivers in water safety and drowning prevention. This course focuses on comfort in the water and does not provide swim technique instruction nor emphasis on self-rescue, at this level.
Swim School
3 to 8 years
Swim School helps develop comfortability and safety skills in the water with a focus on self-rescue. Students will work through the five swim benchmarks and safety benchmarks using age-appropriate learning activities. Participants progress through the levels working at their own pace. Swim School does not emphasize swim technique and stroke development.
White (Trust and Submersion): This level is for swimmers who are not comfortable getting their face wet or submerging under water. The safety focus for this level is asking permission to enter the water and the swimming focus is submersion for 3 to 5 seconds.
Red (Body Positions and Air Exchange): This level is for swimmers who are comfortable submerging for 3 to 5 seconds but cannot float on their front and back without support. The safety focus for this level is using lifejackets safely and the swimming focus is jumping in and floating for 3-5 seconds on the front and back.
Yellow (Forward Movement and Direction Change): This level is for swimmers who are comfortable jumping in and floating on their front and back for 3-5 seconds but cannot tread water for 10 seconds and/or move forward through the water 30 feet without stopping. The safety focus for this level is treading for 10 seconds and the swimming focus is to swim, roll to the back to breathe, and continue swimming the length of the pool.
Blue (Streamlines): This level is for swimmers who can tread for at least 10 seconds but cannot streamline underwater or swim on their side. The safety focus for this level is reaching assists with floatation and the swimming focus is swimming with side breathing for at least half the length of the pool.
Green (Water Competency): This is the final level in swim school and builds on all the skills previously learned to prepare swimmers for stroke school. The safety focus for this level is recovering from disorienting entries and the swimming focus requires asking for permission before entering the water, jumping into the water and submerging, resurfacing and treading for 1 minute, and 50 yards of arm and legs actions on the front or back.
Stroke School
5 to 12 years
Stroke School is designed for advanced swimmers and focuses on learning and refining stroke technique. Participants will learn the fundamentals of front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. There is also an emphasis on water safety, exercise, and endurance. Participants in this level must be able to swim independently across the length of the pool and tread water for 30 seconds.
White (Front Crawl and Backstroke): This levels builds off what was taught in swim school blue/green and focuses on teaching and refining stroke technique for front crawl. The safety focus for this level is asking permission before entering the water and the swimming focus is 25 yards of front crawl and backstroke with good technique.
Red (Resting Strokes): This level teaches swimmers resting strokes including elementary backstroke and side stroke. The safety focus for this level is donning a lifejacket in emergency situations and the swimming focus is 25 yards of elementary backstroke and sidestroke with good technique.
Yellow and Blue (Butterfly and Breaststroke): This level teaches swimmers butterfly and breaststroke. The safety focus in this level is survival float and emergency scenarios and the swimming focus is 25 yards of butterfly and breaststroke with good technique.
Green (Endurance and Fitness): This level helps swimmers build endurance so they can swim longer distances of front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. This level also helps swimmers prepare for swim team by teaching dives (outdoor pool only) and turns. The safety focus for this level is treading or survival float for 5 minutes and the swimming focus is a 300 yard swim using at least four strokes with good technique.
